Sumo Drill

Sumo Drill

This drill is designed to teach offensive linemen how to execute and hold the proper blocking technique.

POINTS OF EMPHASIS

Encourage players to keep their heads up and maintain a wide base with their feet while blocking. Players should try to keep their hands inside and strive to get a grip under the front of their opponents' shoulder pads.

SETUP

Sumo Drill

Set up four dummies in a square about four feet on a side as shown above. Split players into two teams and match up opposing players by size.  One player from each team gets into the middle of the square and takes position in a three-point stance. The two players inside the square should be approximately the same size.

EXECUTION

Both players act as offensive linemen. On the coach’s signal both players fire out in an attempting to block their opponent and move him over the boundary of the dummies. A point is awarded to the player’s team that wins the battle of the blockers.  Continue with two new players until all players have had a turn.  The team with the most points is the winner.
