OBJECTIVE
This drill is designed to introduce the quarterback position to players for the first time.
POINTS OF EMPHASIS
There are no running backs in this drill. The coach will stress the following:
Head up, shoulders and feet square to the line of scrimmage
Hands open but together at the heel of the palm, thumbs touching
Passing hand on the top
Look left and right to see if linemen are ready before calling cadence
Place hands under the coach's hand simulating the center.
Using the bottom hand, push the top hand against the center’s butt (or in this drill the coach’s hand)
Call the cadence loud enough for all linemen to hear
Don’t rush the cadence. Pause at least one second between “Ready”, “Set” and “Hut”
Upon the snap, “ride” the center by extending the hands forward slightly as the center fires out.
Upon taking the exchange back, secure it in your “third hand” (your stomach) prior to making a handoff or pass.
After securing the football, take a 90 degree pivot step to the right in preparation for making a handoff. In making the pivot the player must move and plant both feet. Player should avoid turning the body without making the pivot steps with both feet.
Repeat with a pivot step to the left.
QUARTERBACK STATION #1 SETUP
A center is not used in this drill. Instead the coach positions himself on one knee and uses one hand to replicate the centers butt. To execute the snap, the QB places his top hand under the coaches hand. On the snap count, the coach snaps the ball into the hand of the quarterback
EXECUTION
This drill requires one coach for each player initially. After the drill is intruded to a group of players, a player can take the place of the coach in the drill and the coach can oversee several quarterback stations.
