First Live Tackling Drill
This drill is designed to teach defensive players to experience the thrill of making their initial tackle against a real ball carrier using the heads up techniques learned earlier.
POINTS OF EMPHASIS
Both Players start on their feet.
Ball carrier must run through the cones,
Tackler should breakdown, buzz the feet and approach the ball carrier in the proper hit position and execute the Shoot and Rip techniques while keeping the head up.
It is not necessary to bring the ball carrier to the ground but the defender should execute proper heads up technique.
SETUP
Place cones was described below. Have 2 players stand facing each other each other no more than two yards apart. One of the players is the ball carrier and the other is a defender.
EXECUTION
Place 2 cones as shown. Have 2 players stand facing each other each other no more than two yards apart. One of the players is the ball carrier and the other is a defender.
Pay close attention to match ups keeping players paired with someone of their same skill/aggressiveness level.
Both players start from a good body position with defender already in the breakdown position On the coaches command the runner starts forward while the tackler buzzes his feet and prepares to execute the tackle. The ball carrier must run through the cones and the defender tries to get in position to make a tackle. Set up multiple groups and have them ready and waiting to go but have each group do the drill one at a time. Rotate tacklers and runners.
