Defensive Drill
This drill is designed to teach defensive ends how to execute the proper technique as taught in JDL Football.
POINTS OF EMPHASIS
Check for the correct stance for the DEs. They should line up just outside of the offensive end looking in at the quarterback. On the snap they should penetrate into the backfield to the depth of the marking cone and “break down” at the cone. Then proceed to tackle the appropriate dummy. Make sure that they do not knife directly in to the dummy. Use the term "defensive ends box" to describe this technique.
SETUP
Defensive End Drill
Set up multiple stations for this Defensive End Station drill. Use cones to identify the offensive linemen. Place a ball at the center position. Position cones at the depth in the backfield (about three yards) where the DEs should complete their box and where they should “break down”. Line up defensive ends at each end of the line and have them face in to the ball. Stand 2 yellow dummies 3 yards deep in the offensive backfield one behind the other and directly behind the ball.
EXECUTION
A coach will move the ball to simulate a snap to start the drill. On the snap, the 2 DEs will box square into the backfield, “break down”, then rush and tackle the dummies. Have the left defensive end tackle the front dummy and the right defensive end tackle the rear dummy.
