Jan 2014: Fourteen Poets 400 BRM

Yelagiri hills

The Ride

What is more interesting than a brevet with a hill climb? Obviously, a brevet with two climbs. IISc Randonneurs offers the randonneur community of Bangalore, a modified version of the first brevet to feature a hill climb.

Riders start from the IISc campus on Friday night, rush through the mostly downhill NH 7 towards Krishnagiri aiming to make the most of the cold night, and continue past Krishnagiri to reach the first control at Vinnamangalam. Then they turn back to Vaniyambadi and get off the highway to reach the base of Yelagiri hills, passing through villages. Then follows the climb to the top - grueling 11 km, with 14 hairpin bends; each bend labeled with the name of a Tamil poet. The town at the top with its refreshing air and scenic landscapes is popular among tourists as a place to relax on the weekend. Our riders, however, will not have much time to relax, and will start the return leg of the ride.

The first section of return leg is a scenic route through Pernambut with green tamarind trees giving guard of honor to the riders, followed by a nice climb through the reserved forest to enter the state of Andhra Pradesh. Riders completing the second climb get their reward - another section of road through scenic villages till Mulbagal via Venkatagirikota, to enter Karnataka. The scene changes at Mulbagal where the riders get a plain four laned NH4, yet another chance to quench the adrenaline rush to reach back the IISc campus.

This is an ACP-sanctioned brevet ride, and must be completely self-supported. The ride must be finished within 27 hours, but note that it is not a competitive ride.
