Shum Yuen Wah, Ferna

Born in Hong Kong, Ferna began her professional career as an architect. She has also worked with other media of visual arts such as sculpture, mural wall, printmaking, tile design, photography and book illustrations in the past. Her

fascination in the world of ink painting blossomed since 2003 and Chinese calligraphy has added a new dimension in her exploration of creative arts from 2009 onwards.

The subject of traditional Chinese painting is predominately natural landscape of hazy mountains amidst the cloud and streams but gone are the old days. As urban dwellers in the 21st Century, our cityscape is predominated by high-density high-rise living. The blue and green shades of nature are

gradually blurred by a continuous succession of skyscrapers and highways. The tall buildings form vertical layers of our “mountain backdrop” while the original waterfront is eroded by horizontal network of busy flyovers and bridges with an uninterrupted flow of vehicles and people. My “Cityscape”

series reveal a visual account of contemporary architecture and urban space in Hong Kong with reference to the vocabularies of traditional Chinese landscape painting.
