After the 6 lessons of 'Starten met Computers' everybody was able to use the computer and do basic things on the computer as e-mail, use a browser, etc. The goal of Buurthuis Rosa was to get them in an administration job. Therefore a few more skills behind the computer were needed. I am talking about computer, because in 2012 not everybody had a laptop, but a computer was common. And in buurthuis Rosa I taught the computer lessons mostly on computers and sometimes on laptops. All the courses I taught at buurthuis Rosa were as an entrepreneur.
Some of the people taking my courses had to write letters and CV. By teaching them the basics of Word all of them were able to write letters to get what they needed. By teaching the students how to write an application letter and CV all the basics of Word were covered in six lessons. After the Word course all the students could write letters to apply for things they needed or for a job.
Before teaching Excel there was more to learn. When I started talking to with Buurthuis Rosa I thought everybody had basic computer skills. I was very wrong there. I had to improvise a lot in my lessons, a dear lesson to me. Sometimes a skill like using the mouse was something that had to be trained a lot during all the lessons. One lesson was about typing in Word, This one I could skip, because they had a typing certificate and therefore could easily adapt this to Word and the computer keyboard.
I had a basic lesson planned each time and went with the flow of the students’ knowledge in the moment. Sometimes this meant playing solitaire to teach mouse skills and other times it meant skipping the lesson planned and go forward to the lesson planned the next time. Later when I myself was following TEFL lessons I went for the module teaching with limited resources. By doing this I got the tools to improvise and adapt my lessons even more on the spot to the group or individuals there in the lessons.
