When I was in high school (1990-1997) computers started to become a common product in households on Curaçao. My parents were working on one at home so me and my sisters were introduced early in our life to using a computer. I also followed a few courses about using a computer with my mom and sisters. The certificates are between the paragraphs to proof my early start with using a computer to do my homework and make reports.
I am truly not at all interested in how computers work or how the tech behind the computers is setup. My only interest in computers is how people can use it to get their tasks done. This is why I was working at the HES Helpdesk when I was studying Business Economics at HES Amsterdam between 2000 - 2004. I was responsible for answering questions about the use of printers, scanning, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. All the teachers and other professionals working at the HES Amsterdam had to get their computer license and learn to work with computers. I also gave a few workshops and assisted on some more workshops concerning the use of computer programs in daily life and teaching.
In 2012 I setup my business Databeet. My core business is Excel, Big Data and research. My cash cow was till 2021 WordPress. WordPress has never been my core business, but I was sometimes asked to make a WordPress website. More about my WordPress activities in another blog. Like I was asked for WordPress I was occasionally asked for other computer use related workshops. These workshops were all tailor-made for the person asking for the workshop. In 2018 I was asked by someone living on Curaçao to help this person get acquainted with using the basics of computer.
For all my workshops I ask the person wanting a workshop what the purpose is of wanting to know how to use the program they are asking a workshop for. With this knowledge I can make a tailor-made workshop which helps them further than just a workshop about for example Windows 10. This makes my workshops very interactive and also the person following a workshop with me has to get to work. The only way people later on remember how or where something was in the computer program is if they actively used the button or searched for it. If I only present them were they can find the button they won't remember it and then in my opinion the workshop is of no use.
In 2018 I taught the person who asked me for the Windows 10 workshop Windows 10 on Curaçao. She was happy with the workshop and could now profit from the Windows installed on her laptop. It is about knowing where to find things, how to search or how to sort files to find the file needed. Small things but very handy. I am an entrepreneur so she got an invoice from me in euros with Dutch VAT (btw). I arranged most of peripheral matters (randzaken) through e-mail from The Netherlands. That is why this workshop had Dutch VAT.
*Hogeschool Economische Studies Amsterdam ( HES Amsterdam) merged in 2004. I graduated in the summer of 2004, before the merger.
