Gleim

Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim (1719-1803)

During the Seven Years War (1756-63) Gleim produced some patriotic songs (Preussische Kriegslieder; Prussian War Songs), but his greatest achievement is the graceful Anacreontic poetry which he produced in the 1740s (Versuch in Scherzhaften Liedern; An Essay in Jocular Songs, 1744-45; Lieder; Songs, 1749). The lightness and optimism of these poems consciously oppose the severity of Pietism which Gleim experienced first hand (and disliked) whilst studying law in Halle in 1739-40. Here are two examples:

Art zu trinken (1745)

Wenn ich mein Glas geleeret,

So füll ichs hurtig wieder,

Und bring es meinem Mädchen.

Mein Mädchen nimts und trinket,

Und klopft mich auf die Bakken,

Und füllt es gleich von neuem,

Und lobt den Sekt im Glase,

Und bringt mirs selbst zum Munde,

Ich küß es, eh ich trinke,

Es trinkt, und küßt mich wieder.

Freund, dort im Trauerkleide

Soll es dir auch eins bringen?

Manner of Drinking

When I have emptied my glass

I fill it again swiftly

And bring it to my girl.

My girl takes it and drinks,

And pats me on the cheeks,

And fills it again at once,

And praises the sparkling wine in the glass,

And she brings it to my mouth,

I kiss her before I drink,

She drinks, and kisses me again.

Friend, there in mourning clothes

Should she bring you a glass too?

Den flüchtigen Tagen

Wehrt keine Gewalt;

Die Räder am Wagen

Entflieh'n nicht so bald.

Wie Blitze verfliegen,

So sind sie dahin.

Ich will mich vergnügen,

So lang' ich noch bin!

Resolution

The fleeting days

Can’t be stopped by any power;

The wheels on the carriage

Don’t speed away so fast.

Just as lightning flashes,

So do they pass.

I will amuse myself

As long as I’m still here!
