Jatulian Period

Part of the Paleoproterozoic Era

Oxygenian Period - Jatulian Period - Columbian Period

The Jatulian Period is the second period of the Paleoproterozoic Era and of the Proterozoic Eon. The Jatulian begins with the earliest case of breakout magmatism and ends with the conclusion of the Lomagundi-Jatuli isotopic excursion. While the first evidence for eukaryotic life is known from the Methanian Period of the Neoarchean Era, the first eukaryotes are known from the Jatulian Period, the multicellular alga Grypania spiralis. Furthermore, the multicellular Francevillian Group Fossils date to around 2100 MYA. The Huronian glaciation that began during the Oxygenian Period would continue into the Jatulian before coming to a close at around 2100 MYA.

The Jatulian is not further subdivided into epochs.
