Part of the Mesoproterozoic Era
Columbian Period - Rodinian Period - Cryogenian Period
The Rodinian Period is the first, last, and only period of the Mesoproterozoic Era, and the fourth of the Proterozoic Eon. The Rodinian begins at the time from which the oldest known marine sulphidic deposits are known and ends with the first appearance of δ13C anomalies (δ13C is an isotopic signature measuring the ratio of Carbon-12 to Carbon-13 isotopes). The supercontinent of Columbia broke up during the Rodinian at around 1500 MYA. The oldest "taxonomically resolved" eukaryote, the multiceullular red algae Bangiomorpha pubescens, lived during this period and is the earliest known organism to exhibit sexual reproduction. The supercontinent of Rodinia - the namesake of the period - formed at around 1100 MYA. The supercontinent would survive into the Cryogenian Period.
The Rodinian is not further subdivided into epochs.
