Me in the Classroom

As the 4.5 of you who read this blog know, I am an academic economist who has taught and done research at a few universities around the country. With the murder of George Floyd, a black man, at the hands of police in Minnesota in the spring of 2020 attention in the US turned to racial inequality and injustice.

There was plenty of talk but little sustainable action which came out of the world-wide demonstrations and marches which took place. During all of those talks the fact that about 0.5% of academic economists are black came up. Part of the problem was that race was never mentioned in introductory courses in economics, thus, the pipeline of blacks entering the field was/is really low. I was interviewed for an NPR show called Marketplace about how I introduce race into my introductory courses.

I have another blog post on this site titled "Sounds on the Radio" where I normally add any additional radio interviews I do. However, this one was a bit different so I wanted to give it a separate post.
