Cameroon Dinner with Friends

In August of 2018, a good friend of mine, Germain Pichop invited me to his house for dinner. Germain is originally from Cameroon and wanted to show me what authentic food from the country tasted like. I was more than happy to oblige him.

I first wanted to do a little background research on the country. To be honest, I knew very little about it. Click here to see what Wikipedia has to say.

I arrived to see enough food for about 20 people. The funny thing was that all of this was for me, Germain, his wife Solenne, and children Kylie and Kristen. That's right, 5 people. Apparently, a lot of the food had been brought back from a recent trip home that they had made.

Some dishes I had tasted before. I've had ribs before. I have to say, they were great. I ate them with no sauce. I've also had plantains before too. They are always tasty.

But I've never even heard of Bobolo. Those are the white stringy things on the plate that look like Asparagus. They aren't. It's some type of dough that you roll by hand. At least I think so.

I've also never heard of Pistache. Those are things in the picture which look like biscuits. They are actually things made of some type of ground up pistachio nuts and fish paste. I'm not really sure. I do know I ate as many as I could.

We also had Ndoleh. That is the dish that had the shrimp on top. I don't know what that stuff was but I promise, I ate half the bowl. It has some type of spinach/bitterleaves in it.

We also had those large roasted fish you see in one picture. You guessed it, I went though one of them too.

The final dish there is couscous with grilled chicken. I've had that one before.

I'm a rather adventurous eater anyway but everything was excellent. I might have taken a bite or two of everything to be polite but I didn't have to. I tried to destroy it all. No need to ask me if I really liked it. My only problem was trying to figure out what to eat next. I just kept making a circle around the table eating until I finally decided to go home.

There is nothing like good food, good company, and a good bottle of wine.

I've never been to Cameroon but after that dinner, I'm going.
