Voiced final consonants

Pronunciation: The ends of words

Voiced consonants and grammar

Grammatical markers for third person, the past tense, the plural and the possessive are either voiced or not. Because this is systematic, the pronunciation of these endings is quite teachable in the analytic-linguistic approach.

When words end in

  1. a. voiced consonants, the endings are _____ voiced

  2. b. vowel sounds, the endings are _____ voiced

  3. c. unvoiced consonants, the endings are _____ voiced

  4. d. /m/ /n/ /l/ /ŋ/, the endings are _____ voiced

Indicate which of the above four apply to each of these words. Write a, b, c, d beside them

All but one of these words function as both nouns and verbs – this is referred to as conversion.
