2014 Scoring Clarification

Clarification of Scoring Events

Scoring Events:

Bonus points are awarded additional to the basic rates of point scoring, hence, for example, a batsman scoring 50 not out will score 50 points for the runs scored, plus an additional 25 bonus points for reaching the landmark total, plus 10 bonus points for remaining not out at the end of the innings.

Those bonuses awarded for attaining a landmark which exceeds another of lower value supersede any bonus for the lesser achievements. Hence, a batsman scoring a century receives no bonus for the 50 achieved en route, but scoring 150 earns a bonus for each the 100 & the third 50, & for a double century earns double the bonus for 100. Analogously, a bowler, whose 8 over spell includes 4 maidens & who takes all 10 wickets in an innings will receive 36 basic points for the overs bowled, 8 bonus points for the maidens, plus 15 basic points for each wicket taken (150 points) & then an additional bonus of 100 points for the 10 wicket landmark, but they will not receive any bonus for taking 5 wickets in an innings. Penalty points relating to runs conceded apply irrespective of any bonuses.

A golden duck applies to anyone batting who is dismissed on the first ball they face. A player dismissed without facing, for example, through a run out, is penalised only at the rate of a regular duck. Since data for balls faced is rarely accounted accurately in the scoring of a match, golden ducks are not usually entered or specified in the ecb website data, but may be indicated there by specifying 1 ball faced. Weekend captains are asked to bear this in mind & to remember & report any occurrences or to try to ensure these are noted specifically in the score book.

The hat trick bonus applies only to the bowler involved, taking 3 wickets with consecutive deliveries. Any wickets intervening not ascribed to the bowler, such as run outs, negate its award, but the consecutive deliveries may transcend any given over or match. Thus, if a bowler takes a wicket with a delivery which ends an innings & subsequently takes consecutive wickets from their first 2 deliveries of the next bowling spell, this still constitutes a hat trick & the bonus will be awarded so long as, on completion, this information is reported to the fantasy league administrators. Again, the assistance of captains & scorers in this matter is essential. The exception is if a bowler should spread the hat trick across more than one league season, as the fantasy league operates only one season at a time.

Points for effecting a Run Out are awarded to the fielder who initially fields the ball & returns it to break the wicket before a batsman can make their ground (by such a margin that the umpire feels obliged to give them out!). On occasion, this involves a direct hit, in which case only a single fielder will receive the 15 points awarded. More often, the throw from the fielder making the initial stop is gathered by another fielder, usually, but not always, the wicket keeper or bowler, who then breaks the stumps to effect the run out. In such circumstances the player performing the original fielding & throw is awarded the 15 point Run Out bonus, whilst the player gathering the throw & breaking the wicket is awarded 10 points for a Run Out Assist. Infrequently, more than a single assist is involved, as when a throw is relayed from distance & the situation may be further complicated by, for example, effecting run outs following initial overthrows. Although, theoretically, any number of 10 point assists may be assigned, there may only be designated one 15 point run out bonus. In all cases of run outs & assists the choice of assignation rests with the fielding captain on the day & their decision on these matters is final. Thus, again, the assistance of captains & scorers here is essential.

Man of the Match points are awarded for the winner elected following each league fixture. Individual votes are not significant, as these may vary between matches, but in the case of split decisions, the 18 points up for award will be divided equally between those elected the winners. In the case of any match abandoned before reaching a conclusive league result, although points awarded for cricketing performances will be scored, there will be no MoM vote. Once more, the information relies on the reports of the captains or otherwise the score book & would ideally receive a mention in the website highlights box for that fixture.

Points awarded for selection in any game which fails to reach a conclusion or which for any other reason is not entered on the ecb website are dependent entirely on information provided by the weekend captains. Likewise, penalties applying to players who are selected but fail to appear for the game without advising their captain in advance of the day of the match depend upon the report of the weekend captain. The administrators reserve the right to waive this penalty under exceptional circumstances.

A player who stands in temporarily at short notice as 12th man or substitute will receive all fantasy points due for their performance under their own name. From a minimum commitment of 5 overs spent in the field or covering a batting slot, they will also receive a proportion of the points awarded for playing in a win, tie or loss accordingly, in inverse relation to those awarded to the player they temporarily replaced, but dependent upon the relative proportions of match time each has served .
