Regulation and Stress in Infants/Toddlers
There are multiple factors that mediate the effects of abuse and neglect on early development. Some of the complicating factors include:
Children’s relationship to the offender, particularly an attachment figure
The use of threats, force, and violence
The level of family dysfunction, including intergenerational patterns of abuse
Children’s mental and emotional health and temperament
The child experiences pleasure during the abuse (particularly in sexual abuse)
The child feels guilt about the abuse
