The Ease of Changing the Brain Decreases Over Time
As the maturing brain becomes more specialized to assume more complex functions, it is less capable of reorganizing and adapting. Remember how fast-paced development is during the first 3 years . The brain is rapidly being wired and reinforced, creating meaning and belief systems about who I am, and how I fit into the world, what to expect and how to
react, but, the greatest time of brain plasticity does not last forever. For children who have not been given the secure beginning the deserve, there is a price to pay. Their executive function and ability to self-regulate their emotions are all impacted by the attachments they had during their early development. While the brain is not as malleable as it once was, all is not lost. We always have the potential to grow and learn through relationships and changes can always be made. Early Intervention in children’s lives gives them the best chance to combat the effects of early trauma and increase their resilience.
