Richmond - October 22, 2015 Update

Post date: Jul 12, 2016 9:9:12 PM

The California Apartment Association on Thursday said it had collected more than 7,000 signatures from Richmond residents opposed to rent control, more than enough to prevent the ordinance from going into law.

The signatures mean that the ordinance, set to go into effect Friday, is disqualified, although it can still be placed on a referendum for residents to vote on next year.

The petition will be hand-delivered to the Contra Costa County Elections Office for verification of signatures, after which the county has 30 days to complete the verification and certify the results. The council may then repeal the ordinance or place it on the ballot for the November 2016 election or call a special election.

Update (10/22/15):

Richmond’s rent control and just cause for eviction policy has been officially suspended after enough signatures on a petition blocking it were ruled valid, according to the City Clerk’s Office.
