Mr. Dickson exploded, “The cannibals! You will be eaten by cannibals!” To this Paton responded:
Mr. Dickson, you are advanced in years now, and your own prospect is soon to be laid in the grave, there to be eaten by worms; I confess to you, that if I can but live and die serving and honoring the Lord Jesus, it will make no difference to me whether I am eaten by Cannibals or by worms; and in the Great Day my Resurrection body will rise as fair as yours in the likeness of our risen Redeemer.

The old chief exulted: “The world is turned upside down, since Jehovah came to Aniwa!” No one naively declared the discovery a miracle. Rather, a chief named Namakei drew a different conclusion. Addressing his fellow Aniwans he confessed that he and his people had mocked and ridiculed John, but that the water was there underground all the time. Similarly, the missionary’s message of salvation in the name of the risen Christ was beyond their comprehension. That did not render it untrue. In fact the successful well sinking compelled him to consider whether there were deeper spiritual realities he had failed to trust.
Soon after Namakei came to believe in the one who promised: “Whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:14).
