Preaching and Preachers
What is preaching? Logic on fire! Eloquent reason! Are these contradictions? Of course they are not. Reason concerning this truth ought to be mighty eloquent, as you see it in the case of the Apostle Paul and others. It is theology on fire. And a theology which does not take fire, I maintain, is a defective theology; or at least the man’s understanding of it is defective. Preaching is theology coming through a man who is on fire. A true understanding and experience of the truth must lead to this. I say again that a man who can speak about these things dispassionately has no right whatsoever to be in a pulpit; and should never be allowed to enter one.

The real function of preaching is not to give information; it is to give it more heat, to give life to it, to give power to it, to bring it home to the hearers. The preacher is not in the pulpit merely to give knowledge and information to people. He is to inspire them, he is to enthuse them, he is to enliven them, and send them out glorying in the Spirit.

I am deeply thankful that God led me to Lloyd-Jones in 1968. He has been a constant reminder: you don’t have to be cool, hip, or clever to be powerful. In fact, the sacred anointing is simply in another world from those communication techniques. His is the world I want to live in when I step into the pulpit.

The controversy regarding his address to the National Association of Evangelicals October 18, 1966 is discussed. The full message is in Knowing the Times; Addresses Delivered on Various Occasions, 1942-1977. Iain Murray published a review of the event "Dr. Lloyd-Jones: A Review of Criticism" in the November 2006 The Banner of Truth
The World Council of Churches, and the Ecumenical and Anglo-Catholic movements in Great Britain, in the 50s and 60s expected Evangelicals to be in fellowship with any denomination that claimed to be "Christian", even while that group denied the fundamentals of the faith; the authority of Scripture, the divinity of Christ and His substitutionary atonement and resurrection, and justification by faith.
"The greatest need of the hour" is not secession or schemes of unity but "an … outpouring of the Holy Spirit in … revival. Nothing else throughout the centuries has ever given the Church true authority and made her, and her message, mighty. But what right have we to pray for this, or to expect that he will honour or bless anything but the truth that he himself enabled the authors of the Old Testament and the New Testament to write? To ask him to do so is not only near blasphemy but also the height of folly. Reformation and revival go together and cannot be separated. He is the Spirit of truth, and he will honour nothing but the truth."
Truth Unchanged, Unchanging The first Jonathan Blanchard Lectures delivered at Wheaton College, August, 1947
"To have fellowship with men who deny the truth is to deny the truth by implying that the truth does not matter."

"Who Were The Welsh Calvinistic Methodists?"
https://www.growingingrace.blog/2019/11/03/who-were-the-calvinistic-methodists/
The ‘Calvinistic Methodist’ denomination arose from the evangelical conversions of Howell Harris and Daniel Rowland in 1735 and the ultimate separation of Whitefield from the Wesleys over the Calvinistic interpretation of Article 17 of the Anglican Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion concerning predestination and election. It was distinctly Welsh, and not part of (Arminian) Wesleyan Methodism in England. The denomination seceded from the Anglican church in 1811. In 1823, the Confession of Faith of the Connextion of Calvinistic Methodists in Wales was published, based on the Westminster Confession.
The denomination was officially renamed the Presbyterian Church of Wales in 1928; approved by an Act of Parliament in 1933, and then accepted The Short Declaration of Faith and Practice (seven articles) without some of the Calvinistic confessions of 1823.
Lloyd-Jones went to Aberavon, Port Talbot in 1927 and served there until 1938. He then joined G. Campbell Morgan (an Evangelical Arminian) at Westminster Chapel, which was Congregational. The church later joined the Evangelical Fellowship of Congregational Churches (EFCC) (established in 1967) and the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches (FIEC) (established in 1922 primarily of independent Calvinistic Baptist and Congregational churches). Westminster Chapel is now an independent evangelical church, part of the Newfrontiers Global Movement (established 1986).
Lloyd-Jones preached at Westminster Chapel 3 times on weekends; Friday night was primarily exposition of Scripture. His "Great Doctrines of the Bible" series was preached Friday night 1952 - 1955. He preached 372 sermons on Romans October 1955 to March 1968 ending at Romans 14:17 and 260 sermons on Ephesians, October 1954 until July 1962. Sunday morning was typically more topical and doctrinal directed toward believing church members. "Spiritual Depression: Its Causes and Cure" sermons was delivered Sunday mornings in 1954. His series on the Sermon on the Mount was delivered Sunday mornings 1959 - 1960 and he preached 32 sermons from the Gospel of John Chapter 1 on successive Sunday mornings October 1962 to June 1963. On Sunday evenings, students from all over London came to hear his messages (including J.I. Packer as a 22 year old in 1948) which were primarily evangelistic. He typically travelled throughout England and Wales by train visiting churches and preaching once every week, and used the time travelling to prepare messages and return correspondence.

"The Glory of the Cross", on Galatians 6:14 “May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” Includes the two Pastoral Prayers, 3 Hymns, and Lloyd-Jones' Scripture reading of Ephesians 2:1-22. Preached on Sunday evening, November 24, 1963, two days after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
"We pray that Thou might visit us in the power of Thy might...Arise and speak Oh Lord...Sober the nations that they might return to Thee...God have mercy upon us...We pray for that young widow and young children."
I know of nothing that is so strengthening to faith, nothing which so builds up my assurance, nothing which gives me such certainty about the blessed hope for which I am destined, as the understanding of Christian doctrine, the understanding of the way, yea the mechanism of salvation.
People who are saved know what they are saved from, they know what they are saved for, and they know that their supreme desire is to serve God, to honour Him, and to magnify and to glorify His great and holy name.
God’s Ultimate Purpose: An Exposition of Ephesians One
Why do I believe this gospel? Why am I not today as are so many millions in the world? Why am I interested in the Bible? Why do I believe it? There is but one answer. It is the grace of God, who worketh in me mightily. He began the work. He will continue with it. He will finish it; and I shall stand before Him perfect, complete, and cast my crown before Him “lost in wonder, love and praise.”
I believe increasingly that the most delicate test we can ever have of the fact that we are Christians is that we are amazed and surprised at that fact, that we never cease to wonder at ourselves. We have a sense of escape, of having been delivered. We have a deep consciousness of the privilege and a consciousness of the responsibility. We look at ourselves and say, ‘Am I of God in that sense? Is that true of me? Is it possible that I am going to be with Him and in His presence for all eternity? Is it possible that such a worm as I should be able to say, “Abba Father” and know that the eternal everlasting God is my Father in the Lord Jesus Christ?’ We are ‘of God’ – oh, the wonder and amazement of it all, the surprise and the gratitude, the praise and the thanksgiving, the privilege and the high responsibility!

The real cause of the (unsatisfactory spiritual condition) of the Church of God on earth is to be found in the Church’s voluntary departure from a belief in the Bible as the fully inspired Word of God, and from stressing and emphasizing real evangelical truth….the Church lost her authority and power from the moment that she ceased to believe firmly in the authority of the Word of God…
We are called upon to pronounce, to declare, and to state in no uncertain way the central verities and truths of the Bible, to proclaim that it is the full and final revelation of God’s will for men and God’s salvation for mankind.
Our first call is to declare in a certain and unequivocal manner the sovereignty, the majesty, and the holiness of God; the sinfulness and the utter depravity of man, and his total inability to save and to rescue himself; and the sacrificial, expiatory, atoning death of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, on that cross on Calvary’s hill, and His glorious resurrection, as the only means and only hope of human salvation.
We must come back to that old position and declare the justice and righteousness of God as well as the love of God. We must emphasize once more the wrath of God as well as the mercy of God; and we must picture salvation, not merely as something that makes people feel happy and comfortable, but as the one and only means of saving them from hell and from the wrath of God and the punishment of sin.
May God, in His mercy and grace, deliver us from our present weakness and sentimentality, and grant unto us again boldness of utterance that we may convict and convert this sinful generation from the error of its ways.

Martyn Lloyd-Jones’ letter December 22, 1926 accepting the invitation to pastor Bethlehem Forward Movement Church, Sandfields, Aberavon, South Wales
“It is for us, by prayer and spiritual exercises, to prepare ourselves for the great work that lies ahead of us.”
Lloyd-Jones' first sermon at Sandfields was from 1 Corinthians 2:2
"For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified."
It is also inscribed on his and Bethan's tombstone in Wales.
