Be Filled With Expectancy

Psalm 62:5 (KJV)

My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.

C.H. Spurgeon

Treasury of David

My expectation is from him. We expect from God because we believe in him. Expectation is the child of prayer and faith, and is owned of the Lord as an acceptable grace. We should desire nothing but what would be right for God to give, then our expectation would be all from God; and concerning truly good things we should not look to second causes, but to the Lord alone, and so again our expectation would be all from him. The vain expectations of worldly men come not; they promise but there is no performance; our expectations are on the way, and in due season will arrive to satisfy our hopes. Happy is the man who feels that all he has, all he wants, and all he expects are to be found in his God.

Morning and Evening

It is the believer's privilege to use this language. If he is looking for aught from the world, it is a poor "expectation" indeed. But if he looks to God for the supply of his wants, whether in temporal or spiritual blessings, his "expectation" will not be a vain one. Constantly he may draw from the bank of faith, and get his need supplied out of the riches of God's lovingkindness. My Lord never fails to honour His promises; and when we bring them to His throne, He never sends them back unanswered. Therefore I will wait only at His door, for He ever opens it with the hand of munificent grace. At this hour I will try Him anew.

Exodus 14:13

Joshua 3:5

Job 37:5-15

Pause a moment and consider the wonderful things God does.

Isaiah 43:19 (ESB)

Look, I am about to do something new; even now it is coming. Do you not see it? Indeed, I will make a way in the wilderness, rivers in the desert.

Matthew 19:26

But Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."

Ephesians 3:20

Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us...

(Good News Translation) To him who by means of his power working in us is able to do so much more than we can ever ask for,

or even think of...

William Carey in his 1792 sermon upon the organization of the Baptist Missionary Society

Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God!

Andrew Murray “How to Pray – Not Limiting God”

Jeremiah 32: 17, 27 Ah, Lord GOD! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you… "I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?”

Beware, in your prayer, above everything, of limiting God, not only by unbelief, but by fancying that you know what He can do. Expect unexpected things. Expect great things.

D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones Spiritual Depression: Its Causes and Cure on Psalm 42

You must go on to remind yourself of God, Who God is, and what God is and what God has done, and what God has pledged Himself to do. Then having done that, end on this great note: defy yourself, and defy other people, and defy the devil and the whole world, and say with this man: “I shall yet praise Him, my Savior and my God.”

Heavenly Father, save us from the sin of despair. Light the lamp of hope in every heart.

Fill us with the spirit of expectancy.
