Satan writes his laws in the blood of his subjects, grinds them with cruel oppression, wears them out with bondage to divers lusts, and rewards their service with everlasting misery. And yet…in the gospel proclamation (is) made that if any poor sinners, weary of the Devil’s government, and laden with the miserable chains of his spiritual bondage, shall thus come and repair to Christ, he shall have protection from God’s justice, the Devil’s wrath, and sin’s dominion; in a word, he shall have glorious rest. (Isaiah 11:10)

Peace of conscience and godliness of life can never be one without the other.

Believing in Jesus, you are at peace with God—at peace with his justice; at peace with his law; at peace with your own conscience. You have nothing to fear in the hour of death. You have nothing to dread at the day of judgment. Christ has paid your debt, and satisfied for your sins; and, fully reconciled to you by the blood of his Son, a just and holy God has no quarrel with you now. Christ's dying legacy is, “peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you” (John 14:27)
J. C. Ryle A Lasting Peace
Reader, peace is a blessed thing. War is an immense evil. Peace ought to be prayed for night and day by all who love their country. But, after all, there is only one peace which is lasting, and that is the peace with God which faith in Christ gives.
There is no happiness compared with that which this peace affords. A calm sea after a storm, a blue sky after a black thunder cloud, health after sickness, light after darkness, rest after toil; all are beautiful and pleasant things. But none, none of them all can give more than a feeble idea of the comfort which those enjoy who believe in Christ, and have peace with God. It is peace which passeth all understanding.
It is the want of this very peace which makes many in the world unhappy. Hundreds have everything that is thought able to give pleasure and yet are never satisfied. Their hearts are always aching. There is a constant sense of emptiness within. And what is the secret of all this? They have no peace with God.
It is the possession of this very peace on which the value of a man's religion depends. Without it there may be everything to please the eye, and gratify the ear-forms, ceremonies, services, and sacraments-and yet no good done to the soul. The grand question that should try all, is the state of a man's conscience. Is it at peace? Has he peace with God?
Reader, this is the very peace about which I address you this day. Have you got it? Do you feel it? Is it your own? Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall have lasting peace. God says of the unsaved: "The way of peace they know not." Isaiah 59: 8 , but of the Christian God says that "He will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Him because he trusteth in Him" Isaiah 26: 3.

The Warfare of the Spirit, “Joy Will Come in Its Own Time”
Any appeal to the public in the name of Christ that rises no higher than an invitation to tranquility must be recognized as mere humanism with a few words of Jesus thrown in to make it appear Christian. Only that is truly Christian which accords with the Spirit and teachings of Christ. Everything else is un-Christian or anti-Christian, no matter whence it emanates.
Christ calls men to carry a cross; we call them to have fun in His Name. He calls them to forsake the world; we assure them that if they but accept Jesus the world is their oyster. He calls them to suffer; we call them to enjoy all the bourgeois comforts modern civilization affords. He calls them to self-abnegation and death. We call them to spread themselves like green bay trees or perchance even to become stars in a pitiful fifth-rate religious zodiac. He calls them to holiness; we call them to a cheap and tawdry happiness that would have been rejected with scorn by the least of the Stoic philosophers.
What should a serious-minded Christian do? The answer is easy to give but hard to follow.
First, accept the truth concerning yourself. You do not go to a doctor to seek consolation but to find out what is wrong and what to do about it. Seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness. Seek through Jesus Christ a right relationship to your fellow man. Set about reverently to amend your doings. Magnify God, mortify the flesh, simplify your life. Take up your cross and learn of Jesus Christ to die to this world that He may raise you up in due time.
If you will do these things in faith and love, you will know peace, but it will be the peace of God that passes all understanding. You will know joy, but it will be the joy of resurrection, not the irresponsible happiness of men who insist on carnal enjoyments. You will know the comfort of the indwelling Spirit which will often spring up like a well of water in the desert, not because you have sought it but have sought rather to do the will of God at any price.
The Knowledge of the Holy
(Only) the gospel can lift this destroying burden (of sin) from the mind, give beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, and the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. (Isaiah 61:3)
