Wake Up!

Romans 13:11,12,14a

The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armour of light (and) clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ.

John Calvin on Romans 13:11-14

By light he means the revelation of divine truth, by which Christ the sun of righteousness arises on us. (Malachi 4:2)    He mentions awake, by which he intimates that we are to be equipped and prepared to undertake the services which the Lord requires from us.

Thomas a' Kempis  The Imitation of Christ

Why wilt thou defer thy good purpose from day to day? Arise, and begin in this very instant, and say, “Now is the time to be doing; now is the time to be striving; now is the fit time to amend myself.” Unless thou dost earnestly force thyself, thou shalt never get the victory over sin.

A.B. Simpson

One of the greatest enemies to faith is indolence. It is much easier to lie and suffer than to rise and overcome. It is much easier to go to sleep on a snowbank and never wake again than to rouse one's self and shake off the lethargy and overcome the stupor. Faith is an energetic art. Prayer is intense labor. The effectual working prayer of the righteous man availeth much.

Satan tries to put us to sleep as he did the disciples in the garden. Let us not sleep as do others, but let us awake and be sober, continuing in prayer and watching thereunto with all perseverance (Ephesians 6:18), stirring up ourselves to take hold of God's strength, not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promise (Hebrews 6:12).

William Gurnall  The Christian in Complete Armour

The saint's sleeping time is Satan's tempting time. The Christian asleep in security may soon be surprised and lose much of his spiritual strength. Sleep creeps upon the soul as it does on the body.

Wake up, believers, from your lowly condition! Throw away your laziness, sluggishness, coldness, or whatever is interfering with your pure love for Christ. Make Him the Source, the Center, and the One who encompasses every delight of your soul. Refuse to be satisfied any longer with your meager accomplishments. Aspire to a higher, a nobler, and a fuller life. Upward to heaven! Nearer to God!

Adoniram Judson

A life once spent is irrevocable. It will remain to be contemplated through eternity...the same may be said of each day. When it is once past, it is gone forever. All the marks which we put upon it, it will exhibit forever...each day will not only be a witness of our conduct, but will affect our everlasting destiny....How shall we then wish to see each day marked with usefulness! It is too late to mend the days that are past. The future is in our power. Let us, then, each morning, resolve to send the day into eternity in such a garb as we shall wish it to wear forever. And at night let us reflect that one more day is irrevocably gone, indelibly marked.

S. Lewis Johnson on "Christian Somnambulists"

They walk in their sleep. Our churches, our Evangelical churches, are full of people like this. They're going through the motions. Have you ever seen anybody walk in their sleep? They're walking. They actually have motor power, but they don't know what's going on....They're sitting in our meetings. They bow their heads when prayer is made. They actually read, but they don't pay any attention to what they read. They're inwardly asleep.

There is such a thing as moral sleep. It is entirely possible to be displeasing God and grieving the Holy Spirit by being asleep morally.
