Christ Is Risen - The Resurrection

Christos Anesti!

The strife is o'er, the battle done;

the victory of life is won;

the song of triumph has begun.

Alleluia!

Robert Lowry, 1874

Low in the grave he lay,

Jesus my Saviour,

Waiting the coming day,

Jesus my Lord.

Up from the grave he arose

with a mighty triumph o’er his foes;

he arose a victor from the dark domain,

and he lives forever, with his saints to reign.

He arose! He arose!

Hallelujah! Christ arose!

C.H. Spurgeon “If there be no resurrection…”

Upon a life I did not live, upon a death I did not die, I risk my whole eternity on the resurrection.

Isaiah 25:8a, 53:11

He will swallow up death in victory...After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light of life and be satisfied...

Acts 4:33

With great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.

Acts 13:30 - 33

But God raised him from the dead, and for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to our people. We tell you the good news: What God promised our fathers he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus.

Romans 1:4; 6:4, 9;  8:11

Through the Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ our Lord was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead.

Just as Christ was raised from the dead through the (power) of the Father, we too may live a new life. We know since Christ was raised from the dead; death no longer has power over him.

And if the Spirit of him (God) who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

Ephesians 2:4-5a (NLT)

God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead.

2 Timothy 1:10

But it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

1 Peter 1:3-4

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade; kept in heaven for you.

Tertullian De Carne Christi (c. 203-206)

The Son of God died: it is by all means to be believed, because it is absurd.

And, buried, He rose again: it is certain, because impossible.

(A.W. Tozer - "I believe that Christ died for me because it is incredible; I believe that He rose from the dead because it is impossible.")

Horatius Bonar  The Everlasting Righteousness; or, How Shall a Man be Just with God?

It is now with a risen Christ that we have to do in the pathways of our daily pilgrimage. At every turn of the way, resurrection meets us in the person of the Lord Jesus, and says to us, "Because I live, ye shall live also." (John 14:19, 2 Timothy 2:11). For the life that is in Him is resurrection-life.

John Newton

The resurrection of Jesus Christ was God’s grand attestation to the truth of His divine mission and Sonship, for by it He was “declared to be the son of God with power.” (Romans 1:4)

Octavius Winslow  Daily Walking With God

In proportion as you lay hold by faith of the resurrection-life of Christ, you will have that pillar to sustain you upon which rests the whole fabric of salvation. The peace of God will fill your heart, as you know from experience the power of the Lord's resurrection in your soul. The power of Christ's resurrection lies in a sense of pardoned sin, in our apprehension of complete justification, in the living hope of eternal glory. Jesus saves to the uttermost all that come unto God by Him, because he is a risen and a living Savior, and ever lives to make intercession in behalf of all His people. (Hebrews 7:25)

On Hebrews 1:3 "When he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high."

WHAT a blessed declaration is this! Having finished His work, having made an end of sin, having brought in an everlasting righteousness, having risen from the grave, having ascended up on high, Christ has sat down at the right hand of God, reposing in the full satisfaction, glory, and expectancy of His redeeming work...that the Church of God might have visibly and constantly before its view a risen, living Christ.

But here is our great mercy—Christ is alive. What if we are unknown, tried, tempted, and sad; we yet have a risen Savior to go to, who, as Rutherford says, "sighs when I sigh, mourns when I mourn, and when I look up He rejoices." How can I want for sympathy, when I have a risen Christ? how can I feel alone and sad, when I have the society and the soothing of a living and an ever present Jesus—a Jesus who loves me, who knows all my circumstances, all my feelings, and has His finger upon my every pulse—who sees all my tears, hears all my sighs, and records all my thoughts—who, go to Him when I will, and with what I will, will never say to me no, nor bid me depart unblest—who is risen, exalted, and is set down at the right hand of His Father and my Father, His God and my God, to administer to me all the blessings of the everlasting covenant, and to mete out, as I need them, all the riches of His grace and the supplies of His salvation? Why then should I despond at any circumstance, why despair at any emergency, or sink beneath any trial, when I have a risen, a living Christ to go to? Oh the amazing power of the Lord's resurrection!

        "A Living Hope of the Hereafter" on 1 Peter 1:3-5 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again (we have been "born again") unto a (living) hope (hope that enables us to live in confident assurance, victory, and joy) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for us, who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”

The resurrection of Christ announces that He has conquered every enemy. He has vanquished every foe. He has risen triumphant from the grave. Neither death nor life, neither hell nor anything else, can prevent or delay the coming of His Kingdom in all its glory. He alone is King of kings and Lord of lords.

A.W. Tozer  The Set of the Sail

The New Testament points to Christ and says God now commands all men everywhere to repent: because He has appointed a day, in which He will judge the world in righteousness by that Man whom He has ordained (Acts 17:31); whereof He has given assurance unto all men, in that He has raised Him from the dead. God validated forever the claims of Christ. He is who He said He was and what He said He was. Any uncertainty about Him was swept away forever when He arose from the dead, ascended into heaven and sent down the Holy Spirit as His final witness among men. Now it may be said that Christ as the Second person of the Godhead is self-validating. He needs no supplementary witness from the world of nature or from the race of men. He is His own witness.

John MacArthur on Romans 1:4 and Ephesians 1:18-20

Another of the great benefits of the resurrection is we have resurrection power available in our lives. Power over sin and temptation; power over darkness, and ignorance, and folly; power to enable us to serve the Lord and witness effectively; power to use our gifts; power through prayer; all of those things are granted to us through the living Christ who expresses His resurrection power in us.

A.B Simpson

Let us not abide in the tomb, but in the light of the resurrection. Let us keep our faces toward the rising sun.

Arise, shine. Rejoice evermore. In everything give thanks. Praise ye the Lord.

"Welcome, Happy Morning!"

by Venantius Fortunatus, c. 530-609

 Translated by John Ellerton, 1826-1893

        "Welcome, happy morning!" Age to age shall say;

        Hell today is vanquished, heaven is won today!"

        Lo, the Dead is living, God forevermore!

        Him, their true Creator, all His works adore.

        Maker and Redeemer, Life and Health of all,

        Thou from heaven beholding human nature's fall,

        Of the Father's Godhead, true and only Son.

        Manhood to deliver manhood didst put on.

        Thou, of life the Author, death didst undergo,

        Tread the path of darkness, saving strength to show.

        Come, then, True and Faithful, now fulfil Thy word;

        'Tis Thine own third morning--rise, 0 buried Lord!

         Loose the souls long prisoned, bound with Satan's chain;

        All that now is fallen raise to life again.

        Show Thy face in brightness, bid the nations see;

        Bring again our daylight; day returns with Thee.

        "Welcome, happy morning!" age to age shall say;

        Hell today is vanquished, heaven is won today!"

1 Corinthians 15:17 (Amplified Bible)

If Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless and powerless [mere delusion]; you are still in your sins [and under the control and penalty of sin].
