Induction Week Activities for ALL Philosophy Students
Wednesday 20th September
11.00 am 12.00pm - Welcome Meeting [Mandatory]
Welcome from the Head of Department, Professor Rosanna Keefe
Venue: DIAMOND, Lecture Theatre 9
1.30 - 3.30pm - PG Welcome Meeting - Join us at the University Arms and meet academic staff and fellow students.

Thursday 21st September
Digital Learning Introductory Session [mandatory]
Venue: Jessops Building, seminar room 116 [first floor]
A guide to the digital learning facilities including Blackboard
Race, Equality and Consent Conversations Lecture [Mandatory]
Consent conversations will cover key topics on sexual consent, what the law says, some myths and facts about sexual consent and what an active bystander may look like. The session will consist of a 20-minute presentation on key concepts and a 40-minute interactive workshop.
Race Conversations is aimed to explore race and racism, particularly racial inequality in the UK. The session will include examples of privilege, microagressions as well as reflective and interactive questions on diversifying the curriculum and tackling difficult conversations. We will also discuss practical intervention tips, equipping our students with skills to safely intervene and protect themselves and or the victim[s]. The session will consist of a 20-minute presentation on key concepts and a 40-minute interactive workshop.

Friday 22nd September
11.00 am - Library Induction [Mandatory]
Find out how to make the most of the University’s library facilities.
Venue: Diamond Building LT9
3.00 pm - Walk in Endcliffe Park - all new students. [Optional]
Join staff and fellow students for a walk in one of Sheffield's most iconic parks - meeting at the Departmental reception from 2.30pm or alternatively at the Cafe in the park from 3pm
Monday 25th September
Teaching Begins!
The Induction continues with the Research Training Seminars, a series of seminars/sessions that cover a range of topics and skills involved in Philosophy PG programmes and Philosophy research more broadly, as well as preparing for careers beyond your current programme.
The schedule for the 2023/24 Research Training Seminars is linked to below. The schedule also indicates which of these sessions are mandatory for PGT students and which are mandatory for PGR students:
NB: Masters students are also invited to attend the PGR specific sessions, which offer advice on careers, job applications, applying for PhD funding, recommended for all considering to apply for a PhD programme, and more.
