Electronic Equipment Safety
In accordance with university policy, a Visual Inspection should be undertaken of any new electrical appliances introduced to the office or at home for work purposes. Those items will then captured in the annual PAT testing which is carried out centrally.
As the Department Visual Inspector, Rebecca will check items where possible. However all staff should inspect their electrical items used for home working regularly as good practise following the guidance below:
Pre-inspection preparation:
Ensure all packing been removed, including plug pin covers.
Make sure that the equipment is disconnected from a power supply.
Visual Inspection:
Check that the equipment has a UK plug.
Make sure the equipment carries a CE mark.
Check for any signs of damage to the body of the equipment.
And any signs of any damage to the cable of the equipment.
Look to see if there are signs of damage to the plug (burn marks, bent plug pins, cracks etc).
Check if the plug has a fuse and is it correctly rated for the equipment.
Post inspection:
Please inform Rebecca if you have acquired any new work equipment so it can be added to the asset register.
If you have identified any issues upon inspection, please stop using the item immediately - the equipment will need to be taken out of service, labelled and reported to Rebecca and your line manager.
To provide clarifications on what university-owned items are required to be brought back to campus for PAT testing as required within the TUoS Electrical Safety Policy, please see the aide-memoire below;
