Word Count for Assessments

All Philosophy essays and examinations are subject to specific word-limits and should be accompanied by an accurate word count. The bibliography does not count toward the word count, though footnotes do.  

2023/2024 Academic Year

Word counts and standard assessments are as follows but will vary depending on the module so please check with the module outline or consult the module leader.

Level 1

10 Credit modules

Either, 1000-1500 word essay OR 1 hour examination [max.1000 words]
 

20 Credit modules: 

1000-1500 word essay PLUS 1 hour examination [max. 1000 words]

Level 2

Optional mid-term essay PLUS 2000 word end term essay PLUS 2 hour examination [1 question max 2000 words OR 2 questions @ max 1000 words each]
   

OR


1000 word mid-term essay PLUS 1000 word end term essay PLUS 2 hour examination [1 question max 2000 words OR 2 questions @  max 1000 words each]

Level 3

2000 word essay PLUS 2 hour examination [1 question max 2000 words OR 2 questions max 1000 words each]

OR

4000 word LONG ESSAY [No examination] 

"I've gone over the word count - what happens?"

We have a +/- 10% leeway on essay word counts

Then the  following penalties will be incurred for any essays that are more than 10% over the word count:

10-15% over desired word count - deduct 4 marks

15% or over - over desired word count - deduct 8 marks

Please note: There will be no deductions for essays lower than the required limit.
