Departmental Language Programme

Do you need English Language support?

You can access support from The Online Support Hub - a site run by the English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC) at the University of Sheffield.

The aim of the Hub is to provide online English language support in the form of self-study materials, useful and informative websites, regular online seminars on a range of topics, writing advice (distance students only), and tools for increasing academic vocabulary. You will need your university network username and password to enter the facility.

Do you want to improve your academic literacy skills?

The Departmental Language Programme has been designed in collaboration with the English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC), and supports students in developing their academic literacy skills. The sessions are particularly aimed at students whose first language is not English, to help them further develop the linguistic fluency required to study in Sheffield.

One component of the Departmental Language Programme is delivered as part of the year 1 module, 'Writing Philosophy'.

If you need further support and are a fully-registered, degree-level student, you are eligible to access the Writing Advisory Service (WAS).

The WAS is a free service provided by the English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC) where you can get one-to-one help with improving your writing skills, whether you're a home or international student.

If you're having difficulties with any of the following areas of your writing, the WAS team are happy to help:

  • Logical organisation and linking of ideas.

  • Paragraph structure.

  • Sentence length and structure.

  • Grammar.

  • Punctuation and spelling.

  • Referencing, both within the text and in a bibliography.

  • Vocabulary, but nothing too subject-specific.

  • Register: formal vs. informal language.

  • Overall structure of an essay, report or thesis, in general rather than specific terms.
