Green Impact

The Department of Philosophy is continually looking to improve their impact on the environment and their communities. We actively encourage staff and students to become involved in making a difference to our city, communities and in turn our planet.

We promote healthy lifestyles and a good work life balance to make our department a great place to work. This is done through various projects and events that also help provide information, guidance and awareness of any processes and procedures that may have a negative impact or not adhere to University policy.

Thinking AND Doing

Philosophy staff are conscientious and naturally think about sustainability. Staff cycle, walk to work, they don't waste electricity and we try to raise money and donate to those less fortunate such as homeless and disadvantaged people.

Recycling

We are fully engaged in recycling. All our printing paper is fully recyclable. Recycling bins are positioned around the department which enable us to divide waste correctly. We collect and recycle used batteries . Our  used IT equipment is dealt with responsibly through the University's WEEE programme.

Waste

To reduce paper waste the department monitors printer use by staff to raise awareness of non-essential printing, and promotes the use of digital documentation as an alternative. Staff meetings focus on utilising IT and A/V capabilities to show and share information with staff. Where printing is required, we print documents double-sided and in black-and-white. We also publish student-relevant information on the online system called Blackboard instead of providing handouts to students.

Energy

The Philosophy department is committed to saving energy. Staff ensure electrical devices are not left on standby and ultimately turned off when not required. Lights are on timers and staff tend to choose to turn them off in summer months. Staff also ensure that any air conditioning and heating is only used when absolutely necessary. Blinds are kept closed during winter to keep heat in and windows are regularly cleaned to optimise the light that enters the offices within our department. We have numerous posters to remind staff and students about the importance of reducing electrical usage.

Charity

The Philosophy department regularly raises money for Macmillan Cancer Support and The Alzheimer's Society. We achieve this by holding regular bake events.

New Green Schemes list

The Faculty Sustainability Committee has compiled a list of Green Schemes at the university, where staff and students can find ideas about how to travel more sustainably, recycle, reduce food waste, and more!
