NCEA Level 1 History

Aims

To further students’ historical understanding of some major trends and developments in the 20th century and develop a greater understanding of themselves and others in New Zealand society and beyond.

Course Content

Year 11 History will consist of a broad study course, with in-depth studies being taken throughout the year. These may include:

  • New Zealand and it's role in World War I, Case Study - Gallipoli or Passchendaele
  • Key events affecting Kiwis in the 20th/21st century. Selecting from: South Africa - Apartheid/Springbok Tour, or War in the Pacific
  • Black Civil Rights in the USA
  • Rise of Hitler
  • Research into an event of significance to New Zealanders

Skills

Information Gathering - Examining information from a variety of sources; selecting appropriate information; recording information in an organised way

Information Processing - Selecting relevant information from a variety of sources: assessing the limitations of a piece of evidence; distinguishing fact from opinion; recognising specific points of view, bias and propaganda; comprehending simple historical relationships between cause and effect, past and present, continuity and change

Presentation - Presenting information in an effective way — written, visual and/or oral — with well chosen evidence and reasoned conclusions

Assessment

There are a variety of assessment tasks and school examinations. Externally assessed topics are examined nationally at the end of the year.

Qualification gained

Full course completion — 24 credits in NCEA History Level 1
