NCEA Level 2 Chemistry
Aims
- To prepare students who are considering a science-related career
- To develop an overview of all substance types and many of the basic principles behind the properties of substances
- To show students the wide relevance of chemical ideas and build their confidence with practical techniques
Course Content
Students will:
- Investigate and describe the production, properties and uses of groups of substances
- Carry out simple qualitative and quantitative investigations to obtain, interpret and use a range of chemical information
Content areas include:
- Atomic structure, bonding and related properties
- Thermochemistry
- Equilibrium principles
- Quantitative chemistry
- Organic chemistry
- Oxidation – reduction reactions
Assessment
There are a variety of assessment tasks and school examinations. Externally assessed topics are examined nationally at the end of the year.

Full course completion — 20 credits in NCEA Chemistry Level 2

Entry requirements
A satisfactory level of achievement in NCEA Level 1 Science - a minimum grade of Achieved in the Acids and Bases Level 1 is required.
