NCEA Level 2 Chemistry

Aims

  • To prepare students who are considering a science-related career
  • To develop an overview of all substance types and many of the basic principles behind the properties of substances
  • To show students the wide relevance of chemical ideas and build their confidence with practical techniques

Course Content

Students will:

  • Investigate and describe the production, properties and uses of groups of substances
  • Carry out simple qualitative and quantitative investigations to obtain, interpret and use a range of chemical information

Content areas include:

  • Atomic structure, bonding and related properties
  • Thermochemistry
  • Equilibrium principles
  • Quantitative chemistry
  • Organic chemistry
  • Oxidation – reduction reactions

Assessment

There are a variety of assessment tasks and school examinations. Externally assessed topics are examined nationally at the end of the year.
