Aims

The study of English at this level requires students to read closely and think critically while studying language and literature topics.

English provides an excellent basis for study at tertiary level. Virtually every subject will require students to read carefully, analyse information, produce clearly written assignments, and deliver an oral report or seminar.

This course prepares students to sit NCEA English Level 3. It should also stimulate and satisfy her own appreciation of the richness of English.

Course Content

Topics may include the study of two or more literature genres, as well as Shakespeare. Students can be expected to write critical essays, complete a research assignment and present a seminar on a chosen literature topic. There will also be on-going work on close reading and analytical skills.

Assessment

There are a variety of internal assessment tasks and a practice school examination. Externally assessed topics are examined nationally at the end of the year.

Standards and tasks undertaken may be tailored to specific classes and/or students.

Students should be aware that entrance to University requires a minimum of ten literacy credits at Level 2 or higher. Five credits must be in Reading and five credits must be in Writing
