NCEA Level 3 Literary Connections

Aims

Students will primarily focus on raising the academic level of their written English, analysing deeper meaning in more complex texts and using increasingly sophisticated ideas and terminology
Emphasis is on engagement through the personal choice of text and independent research
Entrance to the Scholarship English examination will be strongly encouraged, as will participating in regional/national written and oral competitions
Students will be encouraged to express themselves clearly and confidently in spoken English in class discussions, using increasingly sophisticated ideas and terminology

Course Content

Students will be encouraged to devise their own study program from a choice of standards and be given choices regarding texts. They will be expected to pursue their own independent research.

The course will provide the scope and time to allow for important discussions and thinking pertaining to issues affecting the world and young women today.

Assessment

There are a variety of internal assessment tasks and a practice school examination. Externally assessed topics are examined nationally at the end of the year.

NCEA English Level 3 Literacy Connections - full course completion 23 credits.

This can be made up from a range of the above achievement standards.

Entry Requirements

Achievement at Merit or above in the Level 2 Achievement Standard 91101 Produce a selection of crafted and controlled writing.

Students should be aware that entrance to university requires a minimum of ten literacy credits at Level 2 or higher. Five credits must be in Reading and five credits must be in Writing.

Course Costs - $50 (includes competition fees, special resource materials, trips, transport or visiting speakers, plus the cost of a personal copy of at least one text for study).
