Qualifications - NCEA Level 1 - 3

There are three levels of NCEA certificate. At each level, students must achieve a certain number of credits to gain an NCEA certificate. Credits for a level certificate can be gained over more than one year. See the NZQA website for full details.

All the subjects offered in 2020 at this school have an internally assessed component.

External assessment for achievement standards will be by way of a national examination in November, or by way of external achievement standards that are moderated nationally. For example Visual Arts at all three levels, Photography at Levels 2 and 3 and Design Visual Communication Level 1 and above, are assessed externally on the work undertaken during the year.

Students will gain a subject endorsement for a course if, in a single school calendar year, they achieve:

  • 14 or more credits at Merit or Excellence, where at least 3 of these credits from externally assessed standards and 3 credits are from internally assessed standards. Note, this does not apply to Physical Education and Level 3 Visual Art

Students will gain an NCEA Level endorsement if :

  • a student gains either 50 merit or better credits, or 50 excellent credits or better. This can be achieved over more than one year. For school Academic Blues, the level endorsement must be achieved in one calendar year.
