¨Native American Identity

Horse, Perry G. “Native American Identity.” New Directions for Student Services, no. 109, Wiley Periodicals, Inc, 2005.

The article, ¨Native American Identity¨, is a text mostly about who Native Americans are during this day and age. It is also about how our customs and traditions have changed since our inclusion into a ¨white society.¨ The article also talks about what people think of us as a people from a racial perspective. It mentions the stereotypes, and what differentiates Native Americans today and Native Americans from back in the day.

"Distance learning."

"Distance learning." Britannica School, Encyclopædia Britannica, 7 Nov. 2016. school-eb-com.sfis.idm.oclc.org/levels/high/article/distance-learning/443644. Accessed 4 Feb. 2021.

This article is basically describing what distance learning is as a whole. It is not uncommon since most people who use this method are nontraditional students, like full-time workers, people in the military, and nonresidents of the state they are going to school at. Most distance learning is done over the internet, but there are other methods like using the U.S mailing system. This was the oldest method used back in the 19th century, then once the internet was invented, it got a whole lot easier and more common.

“What We’re Learning About Online Learning.”

“What We’re Learning About Online Learning.” New York Times, Benedict Carey, 13 June 2020. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/13/health/school-learning-online-education.html?searchResultPosition=2 Accessed February 4, 2021.

This article includes quotes from students and teachers in interviews getting their perspective on the new learning system so far. Some students prefer the physical presence in the classroom since most are “procrastinators.” The teachers are also having a rough time since they have to accommodate each student and make sure everyone is on the same page. This leads into the problem that not every student has the best internet connection which is very important in this day and age.

This connects to my topic today because some of the students at Santa Fe Indian School don't have internet access. Thankfully, the school sends mail to those students and they have a system that works. The school also sends school supplies by mail which is good and helpful. Obviously it had to start from somewhere and it's amazing to see where it is today.

"Tribal Control of American Indian Education Observations Since The 1960's With Implications for the Future"

Tippeconnic, John W., III. Tribal Control Of American Indian Education Observations Since The 1960s With Implications for the Future. 1999

This connects to my topic because of its relevance to the school I go to. Santa Fe Indian School does a good job being its own ¨private school¨ and takes care of the students. Unlike the schools back in the day where they did not care about our tradition and culture. During the distance learning, the school still tries to upkeep their ¨mission¨. This is good for the students and is a big step for distance learning for native american students if a situation like this were to happen again.

I think this can relate to how native students feel about the topic. Even if there are no huge differences between the two ethnicities, there are similarities. I know some students who learn better in the classroom just because they need that extra reminder to do work. I also know students who prefer to work on their own and feel like they learn way better on their own using this online learning format.

It seems like Canada is doing better than the U.S in cases since K-12th grade are able to have in person learning. But they do have the option to use online learning which I think is good. I am one of those students who are all for distance learning since I like the independence. The big difference would be the amount of cases and what the country is able to do compared to the U.S and my community.
