Sharing One Skin

In “Sharing One Skin,” article by Jeanette Armstrong, she capitalizes on key points of what her tribe does to separate themselves from others. She distinguishes key points like what makes an individual and also what a word in english means to them in their language. A simple word like “earth,” has many meanings to them. It is not just the world we live in, it’s how we create it and sculpt the generation to come. She also mentions how an individual that is born into the tribe isn’t abandoned, they automatically become part of it. Mrs. Grimley also mentioned that it takes a village to raise a child, which I thought related to that sentence of how the individual is part of the community. Right away they are taught the language and as they grow they are taught about who they are and basically their roots as an individual and an Okanagan.

Native American Identity

In “Native American Identity,” an article written by Perry G. Horse, we gather information on Native American communities and preference. We get an understanding of American Indian and Native American, they both mean the same thing but it is just based upon your reference that you choose. We also learn that to identify as a Native American you have to have Certification of Indian Blood (CIB) which we as Native Americans are the only race that requires this. We even question ourselves if we are really even native anymore because of how much we have adapted to the white way of living. We speak their language, we believe in their doctors and not our medicinal men, we even buy cars and do payments.

Teen Health and Wellness, Coping with body shaming

The article starts with the performance of Lady Gaga at the superbowl and how she was showing her stomach and how body shamers shamed her for that but she replied that she was proud of her body and others should be proud of theirs too. Later into the article it talks about how in 2014, the word “obesity” was searched on google twenty seven million times. Now in 2020, the same word had one hundred sixty seven million searches. The individual is also to blame for their body shaming as they see every flaw within themselves, even the little things. Women want multiple things in a single body which is nearly impossible to have such as a small waist, large breasts, a gap between thighs, and a curvy backside. While guys on the other hand want more muscularity. Teens also put others down to boost their self esteem. Family and the way they see you can also play a big role in body shaming and seeing yourself differently but depending on where you come from can result in this.

“5 Ways to Stop Binge Drinking.” Bluecrest Recovery Center, Bluecrest Recovery Center, 17 Mar. 2021, www.bluecrestrc.com/how-to-stop-binge-drinking/.

Alcohol Abuse and Binge Drinking

The article talks about how alcohol is used at weddings, celebrations, clubs, to interact with people and to take the stress away from a long day. Four out of ten high school students reported drinking alcohol within the past month, while one out of five students reported binge drinking within the past two weeks. There are hundreds of different types of alcohol and some if not most have very poisonous chemicals. The article speaks on why someone would want to drink poisonous chemicals, and the answer was as simple as “because it is pleasurable.” The article states and defines what binge drinking is, so if you are a male and have drank five drinks or a female who's drank four or more drinks you are considered binge drinking. It also talks about how drinking can kill you when you’ve reached certain symptoms and when you should call police or an ambulance. Alcohol can cause cirrhosis, alcoholic hepatitis and can cause deformities in infants during pregnancies.

The History of Physical Fitness

In the article “The History of Physical Fitness,” we are taught about the ancient ways of living. It teaches us not only of nomadic lifestyles but of the greeks and romans as well. We are taught that in those times exercise was through hunting, looking for your food, and carrying heavy objects, well at least that was the exercise for the nomadic. We learn for the Greeks and the Romans that they got their exercise from learning basic things like walking, balancing, climbing and carrying heavy objects. This was their everyday life, but as time went on so did battles and now it was time for them to get in better shape. They had different sports like wrestling, fighting but they also practiced throwing Javelins and discs. This then improved their overall physical health. It was also mentioned that they followed a plant based diet which improved everything they did. It improved their overall physique, health, and performance. They have mentioned that humans today are supposed to be on plant based diets as well because our teeth are not meant to eat meat.

Historical Background and Evolution of Physical Activity Recommendations

In this article we still learn about the greek Romans but we also learn how health and exercise changed as a lot of other communities and races were converted to Christianity and through that the focus was more on conversion than actual health. With this came more unhealthy ways of living and it also made them slowly forget about their ways of living, just like Native Americans did. Their land and everything they had was stripped from them and never given back, as for now a lot of tradition and culture is still missing. In those times of the Greeks and Romans, there were also diseases that were brought because of the Spaniards as well, it wasn’t just us Natives that were killed off with this. This then led the communities to their old ways of exercises to build their immune system but that slowly died off as well.

History In The Making

In this article we are introduced to when and how Kobe died, but slowly is blended into who he was and what he did. We all know that he was a basketball player for the lakers, but what people to know about is his Mamba Mentality. This Mamba Mentality came from the movie Kill Bill, as one of the characters refers to themself as the Black Mamba with a killer instinct. As described by Kobe, he mentions that part of his Mamba mentality was to be selfish and become a ball hog. He had so many fails in his life from the sexual assault, to homophobic slurs, to being ranked the most missed shots in NBA history. From these he was able to make his way to the top and be ranked the 2nd best basketball player in history, next to Michael Jordan. We learn that the mentality was bad and good, and he knew that he could make friends and lose friends from it but that was a sacrifice he had to take.
