SUSTAINABILITY AT PERADENIYA
Water Conservation
Conservation of water is a fundamental practice that not only benefits the environment but is crucial for our survival and the well-being of future generations. By reducing wastage, fixing leaks, and using water-saving technologies, we can protect ecosystems, ensure a stable food supply, and safeguard human health. Water conservation also has economic advantages, as it lowers costs and reduces energy consumption. This simple yet powerful act of preserving this precious resource plays a vital role in mitigating water scarcity, mitigating climate change impacts, and fostering a more sustainable and resilient world for all. The University of Peradeniya is committed to the responsible use and conservation of water resources. Through a range of initiatives, we are actively working to reduce our water consumption and environmental impact.
Goal 01: Reduce personal water consumption by 40%, by the year 2030 against 2019 bassline.
Goal 02: Install rain water harvesting systems to full fill 25% of the water demand, by the year 2030.
Goal 03: Establish waste water upcycle facility to recycle 20% of the waste water, by the year 2030.
The University of Peradeniya has adopt several key actions to reduce electricity consumption and promote energy conservation.
Regular Maintenance and Repair: The maintenance division Identify and fix leaks promptly. They are also responsible for regularly inspect and maintain plumbing systems.
Upgrade Plumbing Fixtures: Old and inefficient fixtures are replaced with low-flow toilets, faucets, and showerheads.
Implement Water-Efficient Landscaping: As a practice landscaping of University of Peradeniya is done without irrigation except for watering newly planted flowerbeds and saplings.
Monitoring: Water usage is monitored to identify and address high usage areas
Awareness and Behavioral Change: The staff and students are encourage students and staff to be mindful of their water usage through regular reminders and campaigns.
Educational Initiatives: Effort has been taken to raise awareness about water conservation among students, faculty, and staff through workshops and educational campaigns. The importance of water conservation has integrated into into the curriculum.
The University of Peradeniya is planning to implement following key actions to reduce water consumption and promote water conservation within next 10 years.
Use of Smart Technology: Install smart irrigation systems that adjust watering schedules based on weather conditions and soil moisture levels.
Reclaimed Water: Investigate the feasibility of using treated wastewater (reclaimed water) for non-potable purposes on campus.
Water Reuse: Consider greywater systems that can treat and reuse wastewater from sinks, showers, and laundry for flushing toilets or irrigation.
Water-Efficient Appliances: Upgrade appliances in common areas like dormitories and dining facilities to more water-efficient models.
Rainwater Harvesting: Install rainwater harvesting systems to capture and store rainwater for non-potable uses, such as irrigation or flushing toilets.
By taking a combination of these actions, the University of Peradeniya can significantly reduce its water consumption and contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally responsible campus.
