SUSTAINABILITY AT PERADENIYA
Goal 06: Clean Water & Sanitation
Clean Water & Sanitation
Sustainable Development Goal 6, "Clean Water and Sanitation," represents a fundamental global commitment to ensuring access to clean and safe drinking water and proper sanitation facilities for all. Access to clean water is a basic human right and a cornerstone of public health and well-being. SDG 6 aims to address the pressing challenges related to water scarcity, inadequate sanitation, and water pollution that affect billions of people worldwide. By implementing sustainable water management practices, improving sanitation infrastructure, and protecting freshwater ecosystems, this goal strives to not only enhance the quality of life for individuals and communities but also contribute to environmental sustainability. Achieving SDG 6 is crucial for reducing waterborne diseases, promoting hygiene, and fostering economic development, ultimately bringing us closer to a world where everyone can enjoy the benefits of clean water and improved sanitation.

Access to Clean water
The water requirement of the University of Peradeniya is obtained from the water treatment facility located near the University. The Unit is operated by the Water Supply and Drainage Board of Sri Lanka and University purchases treated water from this unit. Treated water is distributed throughout the campus and is in drinking quality.
Sanitation
As adequate land space is available for buildings of other faculties and hostels, sewage is treated through sewage and soakage pits according to the guidelines of the National Water and Drainage Board of Sri Lanka.
A project is underway to connect the sewage system of University of Peradeniya to the sewage management system of Kandy City Municipal council. Some sections of the sewage lines are already installed. However, due to COVID pandemic and financial crisis in the country, this project is on hold. The University is working hard to make this project a success.
