SUSTAINABILITY AT PERADENIYA
Energy Conservation
Saving electricity is of paramount importance for several compelling reasons. It reduces the environmental impact by lowering greenhouse gas emissions, which is vital in the fight against climate change. It conserves valuable natural resources like fossil fuels, which are finite and have harmful environmental consequences when burned for power generation. Additionally, energy efficiency leads to lower utility bills for individuals and organizations, contributing to financial savings. Saving electricity not only supports a sustainable and cleaner planet but also enhances economic well-being, making it a fundamental responsibility for both individuals and institutions.
Goal 01: Optimize the University's energy efficiency to achieve a 25% reduction in electricity consumption, relative to 2019 levels, by the year 2030.
Goal 02: Transition to 100% renewable electricity consumption, by the year 2042.
The University of Peradeniya has adopt several key actions to reduce electricity consumption and promote energy conservation.
LED Retrofitting: Replace traditional lighting with energy-efficient LED bulbs across campus buildings, pathways, and common areas.
Solar Panels: Invest in solar energy solutions, like photovoltaic panels, to harness renewable energy sources and reduce reliance on the grid.
Optimize A/C units: Regular maintenance and upgrade of air conditioning systems for energy efficiency.
Energy Awareness Programs: Conduct awareness campaigns to educate staff and students on energy-saving practices, such as turning off lights and appliances when not in use.
Timely Repairs: The Maintenance Division promptly address and repair any energy leaks, like faulty insulation or broken windows, to maintain optimal building efficiency.
Monitoring: Electricity usage is monitored and reported monthly identify and address high usage areas
Regulations: In 2022 an internal circular has been issued to reduce the energy wastage within the campus.
The University of Peradeniya is planning to implement following key actions to reduce electricity consumption and promote energy conservation within next 10 years.
Renewable Energy: University is planning on installing solar panels on all the possible rooftops to by 2032 generate 100% of its energy demand.
Green procurement: University is planning on implementing a green procurement policy inline with National green procurement policy (draft) to purchase energy-efficient and environmental friendly equipment.
Smart Building Management: Implement smart building management systems will be introduced to all the building constructed in the future to control and adjust lighting, heating, and cooling based on occupancy and weather conditions.
Green Building Standards: New buildings will be constructed to meet green building standards for energy efficiency.
Motion Sensors: Install motion-activated light fixtures will be installed in rooms and corridors to ensure lights are only on when needed.
By adopting these strategies, the University of Peradeniya can substantially reduce its electricity consumption, cut energy costs, and demonstrate its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
