The center for Environmental Sustainability (CES) of the University of Peradeniya has been rendering interdisciplinary environmental related training, consultancy and research programs since its established in 1992 with the objective of supporting in addressing pressing environmental problems at the national, while extending any possible assistances at regional and global levels as well. Focusing on innovative and interdisciplinary approaches, the CES has been accomplishing these goals by bringing together scholars from related disciplines from nine Faculties (Art, Agriculture, Allied Health Sciences, Dental, Engineering, Management, Medicine, Science & Veterinary Medicine), four Postgraduate Institutes (Agriculture, Science, Humanities & Social Sciences, and Medical Sciences), and other related Centres and Units of the University of Peradeniya and leading stakeholder Ministries/ Institutes/ Departments/ Private and Non-governmental organizations beyond the university.
The main roles of the CES are; capacity building of stakeholders of all levels by offering short courses, training programs, workshops, conferences and supporting research studies on environmental issues locally and regionally and also being associated with global programs. The CES has been striving to become an internationally recognized center of excellence for training and research in environment related disciples with the efforts of ensuring safer and healthy environment.
