SUSTAINABILITY AT PERADENIYA

Goal 01: No poverty

No Poverty

The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 1 is dedicated to eradicating poverty in all its forms by 2030, ensuring that no one is left behind. This goal encompasses various targets, including the eradication of extreme poverty globally, measured as individuals living on less than $1.25 a day, and reducing the proportion of people of all ages living in poverty by at least half by 2030, as defined by national standards. It also calls for the implementation of social protection systems and measures, substantial coverage for the poor and vulnerable, equal access to economic resources and basic services, enhanced resilience for those in vulnerable situations, and significant resource mobilization, including through development cooperation, to support poverty eradication efforts in developing countries, especially the least developed ones. Additionally, it emphasizes the need for robust policy frameworks at the national, regional, and international levels that prioritize pro-poor and gender-sensitive development strategies, fostering increased investment in poverty eradication initiatives.

Programs

Mahapola & Bursary

The Mahapola Scholarship program is administered by the Mahapola Higher Education Scholarship Trust Fund, which is under the purview of the Ministry of Higher Education in Sri Lanka. Scholarships are awarded based on a combination of academic merit and financial need, and they are typically granted to undergraduate students. The scholarship program is designed to support students in their academic endeavors by offering financial aid to cover tuition fees, living expenses, and other educational costs.

Bursaries represent another primary source of financial aid for students. Individuals who do not meet the eligibility requirements for the Mahapola scholarship can seek financial assistance through the welfare division by submitting applications, which will undergo an evaluation based on specific selection criteria.
