Coil & Carve

The thought behind my coil and carve piece was that I am going to try to make it using the ink that no one else in my class had used. My work was made using brown clay that I later under formed into a pot and I carved out different markings on it that I later inked and then fired it. I chose to create this specific piece because I had made something like it in elementary school and I was thinking about replacing ti with this.

I used contrast in the ink because I used the dark black ink which caused the brown clay to take on a more old and rustic feel. My project evolved from a solid block of clay into multiple different coils that I later stacked on top of each other to form the pot.

The meaning behind my artwork is to create something that highlights the lows and the highs of the pot with the different csrvings becoming more noticeable with the ink. My project relates to my life because I have been trying to make different things out of clay over the years and this was the first one where my carving marks didn't look as bad as the rest. I think my artwork could be stronger if I had the chance to start over and improve upon what need to be worked on.
