Sustained Investigation #13

"Me and Big Red"

3.5'' x 4''

Colored pencil on toned paper

I was feeling uninspired, until I was taking pictures with my chickens, and decided just to draw a portrait of me and one of my chickens, Big Red. It was my first time drawing a realistic skin tones with colored pencil, so that was a challenge. I liked how the chicken turned out, and the piece was originally flipped so that the chicken was at the top, but I wanted Big Red to be the center of the piece. My face turned out okay, for my first time, but I still need a little bit of practice. Overall, I liked how this piece turned out, and I'm glad I decided to go for a small size. I also wanted to make sure I had more than one subject and an interesting perspective and I think I've achieved that in this piece.
