Linear Perspective

Practice

For this practice assignment to begin our new skill of drawing objects and rooms from one point perspective, I drew a line across my paper representing the horizon line, and a small dot somewhere along the line to be the vanishing point. I then drew ten shapes, five above the line and five below. To make them appear 3D and as through I was looking at them all from one view, I drew a line connecting from every edge of each of the ten shapes, to the vanishing point on the horizon line. I then "cut off" the lines depending on how long I wanted the shape to be, and erased the lines connecting the shape to the vanishing point.

Room Interior

I started this assignment by drawing a small rectangle near the top of my paper for the back wall of my room. I then drew a horizon line going horizontally through the rectangle and a vanishing point on that line. This now created my point of view, or where my eye level would be at if i was standing in this scene. I then drew four lines from the vanishing point to each corner of the rectangle, then continued them until they went off the page. This now created the basic structure of my room. To create the interior, I drew the required furniture and decoration needed in the room, being sure that every line I drew went back to the vanishing point, unless it was parallel to the ground or walls. Having each line go back to that one point made it look the way one would see the room if they were actually standing in it.

Observational Hallway Drawing

For my observational hallway drawing I chose an area of the school with unique architectural aspects such as the circle lights hanging in a giant skylight in the ceiling. While sitting down, the line where the top row of lockers met the bottom row of lockers was at my eye level, and the spot that all the walls and door frames were going towards was where I put my vanishing point. By using a ruler I made sure every line I drew went back to that vanishing point to ensure that my drawing was accurate. I chose to do this hallway not only because of it's unique aspects, but also because it's the section of the school where my advisory is located and I like how because it's its own little section of the school it's not very busy or ever crowded. With this hallway drawing I'm most proud of my ability to use one point perspective effectively. I'm also happy with the way the hanging lights turned out as they were a bit of a challenge for me because of their round shape. I struggled with getting the sizing right for everything i was drawing because I was going based solely off of what I saw in front of me. Because of this I ended up having to squish in some things such as the plaque hanging on the wall in between the lockers and the classroom door way. I worked around this challenge by looking at the negative space between different things on the ceiling and in my view to be as accurate as possible. Something I would change is the way I drew the floor and walls visible through the doorway. I guessed with how I should approach drawing something beyond the vanishing point and never went back to ask for help or how to fix it.
