Artist Inspired Project

Piece by Diane Arrieta

My final project was inspired by Diane Arrieta. Arrieta is a ceramics sculpture who creates abnormal looking animals with a "fantasia-like" feel. After researching many different ceramicists, Arrieta's bright and wacky creations caught my eye. I was immediately inspired to create a silly looking version of my favorite animal— a giraffe! I began by sculpting the body. I started with a simple pinch pot, created four spheres, then molded them onto the pot to become the feet of the giraffe. I rolled out a cylinder of clay and molded it onto the body to become the neck. I too a small chunk of clay and shaped it with my hands to become the head! After all the pieces were put together, I blended it together and smoothed it over. The short and stubby body and the long neck gave the giraffe a comical look. In the process of sculpting, I knew that I wanted to have the final product displayed somewhere in my room because I love giraffes. With the long neck I had the idea that it could be used as a scrunchie or bracelet holder! I am most proud with my swiftness while creating this project while keeping a higher level of quality. A struggle I faced was the clay drying fast as I was working with it. I overcame this by working quickly and efficiently. If I could revise something about this project I would glaze it a bright orange or yellow celadon glaze.
