anger

*What is the main idea that guided your artwork? (What are you trying to say or figure out with your work?)

The guiding idea of this artwork was how can I depict the feeling of anger?

Anger is a confusing and frustrating emotion that only builds off itself. When I'm angry i have the most intense thoughts and when i was thinking of the passion that surrounded my "love" portrait, I was inspired to explore a portrait at the opposite end of passion. Through this piece I want the viewer to be able to relate and understand what that feeling is that I'm depicting. As I created the work, I focused on how anger makes me feel and what it looks like in my head.

To create the work, I sketched with graphite on bristol because i needed a paper heavy enough to hold paint and smooth enough for clean marker lines. The red is acrylic paint as well as the white of the chain. I used a Faber Castell pen and a Sharpie Marker for all of the black lines made.

In the original idea generation and product, the heaviness of the red paint conveyed anguish rather that frustration to me so I used less paint on my brush and more gestural strokes to create a more reckless look. I also decided to mirror the portrait because I thought it looked better structurally. I fleshed out and added more chains to show restraint and feeling trapped in the mind. Another thing I revised was incorporating faces emerging from the red background, this extra touch helped create dimension and emphasize the emotion.
