Be the Light

9x11 in

While brainstorming ideas for my donate life project, I knew I wanted to create something with the central idea being light. I chose to create a beam of light from a lighthouse shining through a storm, representing the hope you can give someone in need in their storm of worry and fear if you choose to become an organ donor.

To create the lighthouse, I used Prismacolor colored pencils, then cut it out and pasted it onto watercolor paper, on which I painted the dark sky using watercolor paints. I then used colored pencil and ink to write in my message.

For this project, I used yellow as an emphasis color to make the beam of light and the main subject of the piece stand out against their dark backgrounds. I began by drawing the lighthouse using colored pencil, then chose to cut it out and pasted it onto the watercolor because I liked the idea of my project having layers. I then used gestural movements to paint the sky with watercolors to give it a murky and stormy look. As my project evolved, I found I had to cut off my border due to the amount of smudges I had created around it and paste it onto a new piece of paper which worked out because it added created another layer to the piece. I wrote my message in white colored pencil, then used black ink to make the letters stand out. If I were to continue with this project, I would consider making cutouts of the words or letters and gluing them onto the project in order to create a theme of cutouts.
