Inclusion Project

Complete the Puzzle

To demonstrate inclusion of those with disabilities in the community, I chose to show kids playing with each other. The disability depicted here is autism— represented by the child made of puzzle pieces. I created a collage to show different parts joining together to create a picture just as different people coming together creates community. I chose autism because I feel that it is a very ill-understood disability that isn't thought about too often because it cannot be seen.

I used National Geographic magazines, an exacto knife, glue to create the collage, then used Sharpie markers, cord, hot glue, and paint marker to add detail and depth.

I began by cutting out different sections of ground and sky from different photos from a National Geographic and arranging them into a background. I then used an exacto knife to cut out about forty little puzzle pieces from magazines, and put them into a sketch of a child jumping rope. I was originally going to create a playground scene, but I decided to make the kids playing double dutch to show them interacting and including the child with autism. After I glued down the background and the kids playing, I measured and cut cord and hot glued it onto the piece to become the jump ropes. By adding this element, I utilized line and shape to emphasize the child with autism. I then went in with Sharpie markers to add color to the kids and detail to the jump ropes they are holding. I added the border last to give myself as much or as little space as I wanted to make this collage, and I added the accent lines of color to complete the piece. My next steps for this project could be to cut out several leaf shapes to add layer to the trees and create for depth to the background. I could also find other ways to add texture to the piece just as I did with the cord for the jump rope.
