(In Progress) A New Bulb

Marker

9 x 12 in

To create an engaging artwork encouraging people to consider organ and tissue donation, I drew up a three-panel film strip featuring a lamp whose light bulb has burnt out, then is replaced and he is restored to bright happiness. People who are in danger of losing vital organs rely on organ donations to give them a second chance at life. There may be an organ available, but it doesn't mean that it will be a fit for that person, so the motivation for this artwork is to encourage anyone who sees it to choose to be an organ/tissue donor. A close friend of mine has a heart condition that developed during his freshman year of high school, and it is predicted that by his forty's he will need a heart transplant. Having an emotional connection to this topic enhances its importance to me so I want to create an eye-catching piece that will encourage anyone to take part in changing someone's life forever.

This work was created using Prismacolor markers, Copic markers, a fine point Faber Castel pen, acrylic paint, and bristol board. As I do in all works involving ink/markers, I used bristol board for its durability and smooth texture. Prismacolor and Copic markers are both oil-based allowing smooth blending and bold colors. The fine point pen helps define shapes and add detail and shadow. Acrylic has not been incorporated yet, but it will be used to paint over the existing lampshades because I switched materials in between the two shades and both look sloppy and uneven.

I began by measuring out three panels, then sketched out a table and background, measured its dimensions, and repeated the same image in the other two panels. I then sketched out the lamp and its shade and again, measured and repeated. I then went in with color, using pale, soft tones in the background.
