Extended Blind Contour Drawing

Guardian Angel

Marker and colored pencil

My extended blind contour drawing is made up of my face, my left hand, and a small pumpkin I have as decoration in my room. From all three figures together I created this image of a young girl entering a dark cave where, little does she know, a demonic creature waits at the other end. From above, her guardian angel sees what is about to occur and will soon swoop in to stop the girl before it's too late. While creating this art piece, I reflected on many princess stories as well as religious bible stories, both of which were prominent in my childhood.

I created this work using a Sharpie Gel pen, Prismacolor markers, Prismacolor colored pencils, and mixed media paper. I used mixed media because I knew that if I planned to add color to this drawing it would most likely be done with marker, which requires a heavier paper to avoid bleeding. The Sharpie gel pen was a go-to material for this extended blind contour drawing because I needed one smooth continuous line which this pen never fails to produce. I chose Prismacolor markers because they are oil-based and allow easy blending of colors and vibrant shades. Prismacolor pencils are also effective when blending and aid with adding texture over the marker ink.

Without looking at the paper or removing my pen from it, I drew three separate figures: my hand, my face, and a small pumpkin. With the three line-drawings down, I rotated the paper to look at it from different angles to hopefully see any identifiable forms. I finally was able to envision my scene, so I set to work adding color and detail. Value was a major component in conveying to the viewer what the large brown mass was. By shading with a colored pencil then blending it with a marker, I created the shadow and depth of a cave entrance. Color was essential in contrasting good and bad— the devil figure is red and has dark shades while the angel has light shades of blues and yellow. The girl entering the cave has a red cape that ties into the redness of the demon. My next steps could be to blend the shadows under the pillars of rock better. I could also expand the scenery and add a background that improves the art's story.
